Studio and Road Updates and Unreleased Material and More!

So here’s what’s up with thefamily3 right now.

3 is in the studio recording their 7th record. It is, as of yet, untitled. They shared via twitter that the songs they began performing live in 2008- “You Are The Alien” and “One With The Sun” will appear on the album. On May 21st they posted a song title that one can only assume we haven’t heard live yet, “Afterglow.” This time around the band is working at Applehead Recording & Production with producer extraordinaire and original bass player, Chris Bittner (CJB), at the helm. In an email sent out to the mailing list Joey divulged, “Its been a personal dream of mine to record in the room my father [Jimmy Eppard] designed and built. Its almost like having him play on the record.” Also in that email Joey let us know that 3 will be debuting some new material for us at their only show this summer. On Saturday, August 28th, 3 will be gracing the acclaimed stage of Woodstock’s Bearsville Theater with support from original drummer, Josh Eppard’s latest musical endeavor, Terrible Things.

While the Bearsville show is the only 3 concert this summer, the members continue to contribute their talents to live music. 10 days ago (on Father’s Day) Joey performed at Bearsville Theater opening up for King Crimson’s Adrian Belew. Last month (on Mother’s Day) Gartdrumm opened up for King Crimson side project, STICK MEN, the spectacular group composed of stickmaster Tony Levin, his teacher- Michael Bernier, and the eight-handed Pat Mastelotto. Gartdrumm performed with his new project- Gartdrumm/Orchid, which features the Duchess of Funk herself, Alana Orr. The duo are also scheduled to perform at the public-supported Rosendale Street Festival on Saturday, July 24th. Daniel has been performing with The Ricochet and played bass on their debut EP, Don’t Feel.

Terrible Things have been touring nationally non-stop since the completion of their debut record. A few days ago Spin Magazine posted a write-up that included the only in-studio videos to surface from the sessions. More recently Alternative Press Magazine posted the cover art for the self-titled album due out August 31st on Universal-Motown, as well as some back-story on the cover and theme of the record (which was recorded at Synchromesh Studios in Birmingham, Alabama with Jason Elgin). Terrible Things (one of AltPress’ bands you NEED to know in 2010) are currently sharing the stage with Minus The Bear in Canada and The Offspring in the US. They even played an off-date with Uncle John The Baker in Berkeley, CA. In late July-early August they will be performing on select dates of the Vans Warped Tour. Today the band posted a second studio track from their record, “Up At Night.” Their first single, “Revolution” has already received some airplay on various radio stations and is available for purchase on iTunes.

When 3 is not in Applehead Studio, it appears Mours’ Anthony Masington has been in there recording his debut record (being referred to as “H&R”) for his project, Session 606. In a blog posted on myspace Anthony shared that the record (which was begun in 2008 at Darkworld Studio with David “Wavis” Parker at the helm) will feature a slew of guest musicians including CJB who in addition to engineering, mixing and producing the album is performing bass guitar on the songs.

Elsewhere in the family, Nightmares For A Week have entered Nada Recording Studio with John Naclerio to embark on their debut LP. NFAW were also a pick for Alternative Press’ Bands You NEED to Know in 2010 and just inked a deal with Academy Fight Song Records. Their still untitled album is slated for an October release and, according to facebook, will have 12 songs. Nightmares For A Week have posted 2 in-studio videos thus far and invited fans to ask questions about the album on facebook.

Back to the concert tip, three bands in thefamily3 have paired up to tour the US in August. Porcupine Tree, Coheed and Cambria and The Dear Hunter have announced that they’re hitting up a bunch of cities from Hollywood to Cleveland. ( more info from our friends at Cobalt and Calcium )

Elysium Theory is celebrating the release of their debut LP, Modern Alchemy at Keegan Ales in Kingston on July 3rd. Many of the band members had cameos in the music video for “Rabid Animals.”

Dead Unicorn (who supported 3 at The Basement’s 3 Year Anniversary celebration) will be honoring the release of their second LP, Global Thermonuclear War, at Keegan Ales with Nightmares For A Week on July 30th.

Saturday, July 3rd will be the 11th The Broken Radio show. It is an hour long show based in Rhode Island that also streams on the web (and iPhones). The playlist is entirely composed of all sorts of rare, live, and album versions of songs by Coheed and Cambria plus the various projects involved. It’s a great way to get a taste of Coheed and Cambria’s touring partners as well. While the show airs, there is a live chat room for listeners to connect with each other and a t-shirt (unavailable for purchase) is given away weekly to one lucky caller. This week in celebration of the Kill Audio Hardcover release, TBR is also giving away 12 Kill Audio comics (Issues 1-6 A&B variation covers) AND the Kill Audio Preview Book signed by Claudio Sanchez! Lorren K (producer and host) is searching for a co-host in the region. The Broken Radio airs at 10pm EST every Saturday.

R.I.P. Garry Shider

Garry “Starchild” Shider was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 as the musical director of P-Funk. In addition to the heartwork he did with George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelic, Garry performed/composed with Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley & The JB’s, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worell, Parlet, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, The Black Crowes, 420 Funk Mob, Drugs… Gary’s contribution to the world of music is immeasurable.

“Gary was pure inspiration, one of the greatest privileges of my life was to sing in a band with him. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten…”

Mic Todd with Mours

Mic Todd (Coheed and Cambria) in the studio with Mours (Feb 2009) recording “Sharks in London”

Mours formed over a residency of sorts at Darkworld Studio in Kingston, New York. 2 songs have been posted (“Christmas From Hell” and “Sharks in London”), however, well over 13 songs were written from December 2008 to May 2009. It’s unknown how many were demoed. Mours remains Josh Eppard, David “Wavis” Parker and Anthony Masington’s organically collaborative side project though the three of them are currently occupied with other endeavors. Josh Eppard is touring with Terrible Things (who’s debut album is expected out August 31, 2010 on Universal Motown). He also still works with Wavis on his hip-hop outlet- Weerd Science, of which Ant plays guitar in the live show. Anthony is working on his Session 606 debut at Applehead Studio with Chris Bittner and is performing vocals with Delaware rock band, The Flatline Symphony. Wavis is working on some top secret stuff.

Several Fridays ago I learned one of Alternative Press Magazine’s “Bands You Need to Know in 2010” was playing a show in my local scene via @NFAW that night. While there is without a doubt a striving scene in Nyack, New York, not many touring bands roll through anymore. Soon as Nightmares For A Week took the stage, back-up vocalist and bassist, Sean-Paul Pillsworth, informed the crowd that he and his bandmates had just come from a wake. Their close friend, Tim Williams, had just passed on. Though their hearts were heavy, the alternative folk/punk rock trio, tore the Indigo Paradise stage up! NFAW channeled their loss into an incredibly moving and extremely tight performance that won’t be forgotten.

The members of Nightmares For A Week will be reuniting with their former bands on Friday, June 18th, 2010 to remember their lost friend.

24 year-old Tim Williams was a loving and highly supportive music fan and technical drummer. He often offered to lend his gear out to other bands for studio and live use. Tim played in Arcadia ➔ Escalus, The Mast Year (they recorded 2 songs with Sean-Paul at Leaning Tree Studio before he was kicked out due to his chronic sickness), and he was amidst recording with The Media since the previous drummer (Steven Markotta) has become quite busy with Nightmares For A Week. The day of his passing, Tim was scheduled to record some more drums for The Media at Will Tendy’s studio.

It’s been about 8 years since Jerk Magnet has rocked the Hudson Valley. This very special cause is pulling them out of retirement for the night! Word is they’ll be performing their entire Seven Minutes in Heaven (John Naclerio / Chris Bittner) album with the original line-up (Sean-Paul, Bill Manley, Mike Cashen, Jay Longendyke, Justin Meyer) as well as handing out burned copies of the 2002 record. Another band had emerged from the ashes of the HV scene pop-punk staple, Anadivine. In 2003 they released the self-titled EP (featuring guest vocals from Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez - and a few songs about SPP’s friendship with Josh Eppard). 2004 saw the release of their full length, Zoo. Not too long after Anadivine seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth. Bill Manley and Sean-Paul were pursuing separate bands for the first time since, well… In 1998 they were in Least Likely to Succeed (LLTS) together. Then Jerk Magnet formed. After Anadivine Bill started The Median. Sean-Paul joined Divest, Counterfeit Disaster, formed Big Town Small Town… As great as all the music produced from those projects are- the duo just weren’t as satisfied as they are now in Nightmares For A Week. May of 2008 the original Anadivine line-up reunited to rock out for one night at The Basement. The reflowing of chemistry sparked by the performance pulled Bill and Sean-Paul back together. With Steven Markotta (who’s 14th birthday party Jerk Magnet performed at) rounding off the group, the band chose a lyric from their mutual influence- Jawbreaker’s “Fireman” - to represent their formation. NFAW are currently in pre-production of their debut LP scheduled to commence production later this month in Nada Studio with John Naclerio.

Steven Markotta has played in a ton of bands (more than Sean-Paul and Bill, despite his age of 22), but the one project that had the largest impact on the Hudson Valley was the experimental, semi-psychedelic Astronauts. Word is their reunion will be somewhat of a hybrid, being as vocalist and pianist- Chris Bigley, has relocated to Portland, Oregon. Bassist- Simon Hegarty, guitarist- Corey Burleigh, guitarist- Jacob Daniel (The Ricochet) are to play through songs from their 3 releases… 2006 Wizards EP, 2007 split EP, 2008 Boneshaker Demo (recorded at Leaning Tree Studio).

Hudson Valley rockers from 2006-2008 Countess of Persia will also be reuniting to honor the memory of Tim Williams.

R.I.P. Tim. Hope you're rockin' out from up there!
